A brief history of the red lipstick

Red lipstick is a makeup staple for many people: it boosts your confidence, and it completes any evening look. But there is a lot of historical reasoning behind this. In the early 20th century, red lipstick was synonymous with power and strength, specifically during the Suffragette movement. The movement had a connection to beauty as these women fought for their rights, therefore the red lipstick quickly became part of their uniform. Red as a symbol of femininity, but at the same time, bold and powerful.

But its use goes back much further. Already in ancient Egypt, insects were crushed to obtain red pigments to color the lips. In the Middle Ages, wearing red lipstick (and any other type of makeup, for that matter) began to be associated with satanic rites and anti-Christian behavior, which is why it lost almost all its popularity. It was Queen Elizabeth II of England who brought red lipstick back into fashion to further emphasize her fair complexion, as pallor was a symbol of status and aristocracy in those years.

During the golden age of classic Hollywood, some of the greatest actresses of the time made wearing red lipstick their symbol of identity. Important figures such as Josephine Baker, Hattie McDaniel, Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn or Elizabeth Taylor are remembered with their lips always colored red.

Today, this association of power and femininity with red lips is as valid today as it was 2000 years ago. Important women as diverse as Rihanna, Emma Stone, Margaret Thatcher, Madonna, Ruth Bader-Gingsberg, Taylor Swift, Viola Davis or Penelope Cruz have in common their love for this lipstick color, in its different shades.
